◆ 10,000 Senior Citizens Celebrate HKSAR's Fifth Anniversary

Over 10,000 senior citizens of Hong Kong on June 30 celebrated the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region( HKSAR) at a carnival packed with recreation and sports activities.

Organized by Hong Kong's Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the carnival for senior citizens was held simultaneously in four major venues.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at Kowloon Park, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Paul Leung Sai-wah, said, "The department hopes the specially designed leisure activities will bring enjoyment to senior citizens throughout the territory."

"We encourage our senior citizens to do exercises regularly, not just for their physical health but to enrich their social life as well," Leung added.

Another officiating guest, Chairman of the Elderly Commission, Tam Yiu-chung, said, "It is the government's policy to care of the elderly. We aim to improve their quality of life, of which health forms a vital element. Therefore we always encourage the elderly to exercise more."

During the celebration activities, 40 elderly people rekindled their competitive spirit in the "Swimming Challenge" held at Sha Tin Jockey Club Public Swimming Pool, while participants in the orienteering activity in Kowloon Park explored the various attractions of the park at a leisurely pace.

Other favorites included talks on tea appreciation, horticulture and Chinese herbs as well as colorful variety shows.

A photo contest organized to arouse public interest in introducing sports activities to the elderly received warm response and the winning entries were exhibited at the four venues of Kowloon Park, Yuen Wo Road Indoor Recreation Centre, Wai Tsuen Indoor Recreation Centre and Western Park.
