 ◆ Backgrounder: Major Plane Crashes This Year


The following are major aircraft crashes that have occurred since January.

On July 1, a Tupolev Tu-154 of Russia's Bashkirian Airlines collided with a Boeing 757 freight plane, belonging to international express delivery company DHL, in midair over southern Germany, killing at least 71 people. This is the most recent major air disaster this year.

On January 28, a Boeing 727-100 jet of Ecuadorian Military Airlines crashed when flying from the capital, Quito, to the northern city, Tulcan, killing all 83 passengers and nine crew aboard.

On February 12, a Tu-154 civil jet of Iranian Airlines crashed enroute from the capital, Teheran, to western Lorestan Province, killing 105 passengers and 12 crew on board.

On April 15, a CA129 of Air China crashed in Kimhae, South Korea, killing 122, with six missing and 38 survivals.

On May 4, an airliner of Nigeria's Executive Airlines Services flying from the central city of Jos to the country's biggest trade center, Lagos, crashed killing all 76 people on board and at least 50 on the ground.

On May 7, a Boeing 737 jet of Egyptian Airlines crashed near the capital airport of Tunisia, leaving 14 killed and 48 wounded.

On May 7, a MD82 airliner of China's Northern Airlines crashed into the sea near Dalian, Liaoning Province, killing all the 103 passengers and nine crew.

On May 25, a CI611 flight of Taiwan's China Airlines with 225 passengers and crew on board crashed in waters near the Penghu islands. Nobody survived.
