◆ Beijing Ready for Tourist Peak

Beijing has prepared well for a potential travelling frenzy during the week-long National Day holiday. So says Zhang Mao, vice-mayor of Beijing and director with the city's Holiday Travel Co-ordinate Office, a temporary institute for holiday travel arrangements and administration. The office will strengthen co-ordination between more than 10 government departments, including Beijing Tourism Bureau, Beijing Railway Bureau, Beijing Transport Administration Bureau, Beijing Commerce Committee and Beijing Culture Bureau. The move is designed to cope with the tourism peak season between October 1 and 7 and should mean the city can cope with traffic emergencies, tourist safety and any other unexpected happenings. Personnel from the bureaux and affiliated administrations at lower levels will also be co-ordinated. Meanwhile, a center for statistics and forecasts about tourism during the holiday period will gather the latest information on the number of tourists and accommodation in Beijing, which will be released via Beijing Television Station, Radio Beijing, Beijing Daily, Beijing Morning Post and Beijing Evening News. "It is expected that around 2 million visitors will come to Beijing during the October holiday, somewhat less than the number during the May 1 holiday," Zhang said.
