Facilities which enable easy access for disabled people and senior citizens must be completed soon, a delegate said in the Fifth Session of the 11th Beijing Municipal People's Conference.
Lu Zhengming, deputy director of the Executive Council of Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation, said, "A civilized society should take care of the vulnerable and secure their rights in public affairs."
Lu said that no buses in Beijing have been equipped with facilities for the disabled, while in Hong Kong, 2,000 already are.
Sources with the municipal government said that Beijing has started a large-scale overhaul of construction projects approved since September 2000. Those below the required standards must be adjusted to meet the standard.
Meanwhile, the city also plans to perfect facilities for the disabled in entrances and exits of public buildings, toilets, bathrooms, telephone booths, parking lots, sidewalks and crossroads. All this reconstruction should be completed by the end of this year.
