◆ China's Aviation Turnover Ranks Sixth in World

The total turnover of Chinese airlines reached 13.8 billion ton kilometers last year, up 19 percent compared with the previous year, according to the latest statistics from the International Civil Aviation Organization.

China's aviation turnover has risen from ninth in the world to sixth, surpassing the Netherlands, Singapore and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

China's air passenger traffic grew 16 percent last year to 105.9 billion passenger kilometers, the sixth highest in the world. Cargo turnover rose 9 percent to 4.2 billion ton kilometers, the eighth highest in the world.

The five countries still ahead of China are the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. Contrary to China's 19 percent growth, they all achieved negative growth in 2001.

China's aviation turnover would rank second if Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are included, next only to the United States.
