 ◆ China's "dead sea" draws a growing number of tourists

a floating bathing place on a salt lake at Yuncheng city, renowned as the "dead sea" of China, is set to become a new tourist attraction in north China's Shanxi province.

It consists of two floating zones and a mud zone with a total area of more than 8.6 hectares.

Salt content in water ranges from 25 to 30 percent and the water density is more than that of the human body, enabling swimmers to float, said Yang Bin, a professor with the Department of Geology at prestigious Beijing University.

The black silt dug up from the bottom could be used to nourish people's skin and make beauty products as it contained numerous minerals including bromine, calcium, iodine, boron and lithium, Prof. Yang added.

The bathing ground can only receive 1,000 visitors a day and is failing to cope with the growing demand. Therefore, the Nanfeng Chemical Group plans to build a lake covering 67 hectares in three years to meet the growing demand.
