◆ Drug Traffickers Executed in East China Fujian Province

Sixteen drug traffickers were executed and nine others jailed in Fujian Province, east China, recently, for their involvement in eight different cases.

They were sentenced by intermediate people's courts in the cities of Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Putian, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on June 26 every year.

On the same day, the provincial public security bureau burned over 1,700 kg of narcotics at a local sports center in Lianjiang County.

Drug trafficking has been rampant in Fujian and local authorities have stepped up efforts to combat the crime across the province.

Since last year, local courts have handled 872 drugs cases and sentenced a total of 263 people to jail terms, life sentence and the death penalty.

On June 26, experts from local public security and health departments will hold a large-scale consultation for local people, which is entitled "Drug Abuse and AIDS/HIV".
