◆ First Hong Kong Fujian Festival to Be Held

The "2002 Hong Kong Fujian Festival", the first of its kind, is to be held in Hong Kong from Nov. 16 to Dec. 7, said the Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Associations here Tuesday. A series of activities, including forums on economic and financial cooperation between Hong Kong and Fujian, a food festival and Fujian's traditional arts performances, will be launched during the festival to promote the understanding of Hong Kong people toward the economic, social and cultural aspects of Fujian province. Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, Gao Siren, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Song Defu, secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Ji Peiding, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in the HKSAR, will be the officiating guests at the festival's opening ceremony. The Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Associations, the festival's key organizer, is a non-profit organization formed by 129 Fujian communities in 1997. According to the associations, there are an estimated one million Hong Kong residents, approximately one-sixth of the population, coming from either Fujian or with Fujian ancestry residing in Hong Kong.
