More and more Hong Kong people are looking to the mainland for business opportunities, offered by further economic integration between Hong Kong and the adjoining Pearl River Delta.
Figures from the Trade Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region show that about 100,000 Hong Kong people are currently working on the Chinese mainland.
Donald Tsang, administrative secretary of the Hong Kong SAR, said earlier that one can get "a very powerful economic area" if Hong Kong's financial and transportation experience is combined with Guangdong's manufacturing prowess and increasingly wealthy consumers.
The latest survey conducted by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups found that Hong Kong people working on the mainland were mainly the employees of companies in Hong Kong and that the number of young people with a high level of education or professional qualification working on the mainland was on the rise, Xinhua news agency reported.
The survey report, titled "A Study on the Trends of Hong Kong Young People Seeking a Career on the Mainland," said 46 percent of the respondents hold a positive attitude towards working on the mainland.
As a result of China's entry into the World Trade Organization and globalization, the mobility of manpower resources has become the main trend in the labor market.
Tsang Yok-sing, chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, said the hopes for revitalizing Hong Kong's econ-omy apparently lie in opportunities emerging in the mainland.
The mainland has become an area of development and opportunities, a place where Hong Kong people can enjoy quality living at affordable prices.
Ten years ago very few Hong Kong people would buy residential property on the mainland, and still fewer would think of living there.
In another recent government survey, more than 40,000 Hong Kong people have been found to live on the mainland and there are nearly 190,000 flats and houses in Guangdong and Fujian provinces that are owned by Hong Kong residents.(eastday.com.)
