The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced Friday its "Recommendation of May" to visitors is Hong Kong's islands.
The tourism department aimed to send a message that "Hong Kong possessed both a cosmopolitan atmosphere and green resources."
"The City of Life boasts more than 260 scenic islands, as well as nearly 40 percent of land conserved in country parks, all easily accessible within an hour," said Clara Chong, HKTB's executive director.
A series of promotion activities titled "Islands' Glamour" will be on offer to visitors in this month, showcasing these islands' landscapes, traditions and local culture.
Lantau Island's Giant Buddha, the world's tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha statue, and Po Lin Monastery, famous for its large vegetarian canteen, were chosen as the main featured attraction in the promotion.
A Buddha Festival will start from May 12 to 19, including a bathing ceremony to commemorate the Buddha's birth and martial arts performances by Shaolin monks, dragon and lion dances and Cantonese opera.
Other activities include Lamma Tin Hau Festival Celebrations featuring dragon boat races; Cheung Chua Bun Festival, an annual event paying respect to gods who safeguard the island; and Tai O water Folk Festival featuring a traditional fishing village wedding.
The HKTB's "Recommendation of the Month" Promotion started in September 2001 aiming to repackaging and promoting tourism interests in Hong Kong's 18 districts to attract more tourists.
