◆ Macao Has More Tourists in January-April

Visitors to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) have continued to rise so far this year with China's inlanders soaring a year-on-year 49.4 percent in April, the latest official figures show.

Good weather, the traditional Chinese Spring Festival holiday and an upgraded tourist image of Macao are believed to bring in the flocks of tourists, which numbered 3.67 million in total in the January-April period, an 8.4 percent jump from a year earlier, according to figures released recently by the Statistics and Census Services.

China's inland remained the most rapidly growing tourist provider, accounting for 33.5 percent of the visitors to Macao in the four months, followed by Taiwan's 13.3 percent.

The increase was not matched with Hong Kong tourists, which fell 4.1 percent. But Hong Kong was still the largest tourist source for Macao, seeing 1.75 million visitors or 47.6 percent of the total to the SAR.

Statistics show that more than 40 percent of the tourists did not spend the night in Macao. It is a long-time goal the Macao Government Tourist Office is working towards to make visitors stay longer and spend more.

In April alone, the SAR saw 997,900 tourist arrivals, up 7 percent. Tourists from Hong Kong, China's inland and Taiwan made up 44.1 percent, 35.7 percent and 14.8 percent respectively of the total.
