The Macao International Airport continued to record strong traffic growth in March, bringing a 15.2 percent year-on-year increase in passengers handled in the first quarter of this year, the latest figures show.
Last month alone, passenger traffic of 360,660 marked the highest volume for the month of March since the airport started commercial operation in 1995. The combined volume for January to March reached 953,100.
An airport source said that driven by robust cargo exports to Europe, the United States and Taiwan, cargo handled in the quarter soared 40.4 percent to 22,200 tons.
The airport has handled 16.1 million passengers, 355,300 tons of air cargo and 151,400 aircraft movements since it became operational six years ago, benefiting greatly from travelers and freight shuttling between China's mainland and Taiwan via Macao.
It was built on a patch of land reclaimed from the sea with an investment of more than one billion U.S. dollars.
