◆ Preparing for National Day Tourist Peak

The Chinese government and service enterprises have prepared for a peak in tourism expected for the week-long National Day holiday, from October 1 to 7. Sun Gang, deputy director of the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), said during a press conference on Sept. 19 that "the order of travel for the coming National Day holiday will be better than that of the International Labor Day period in May." Many tourist cities and scenic areas have added hotels, parks, toilets and ticketing offices over the past two months; the departments of public security, industry and commerce and public health will increase inspections of scenic spots over the holiday to make sure they are in order, Sun said. Transportation departments have arranged for full transport capacity for major tourist cities. Sun said that the CNTA will set up a special office to contact local tourism departments and handle urgent incidents and complaints around the clock. Sun estimates that the number of domestic tourists during the National Day holiday period will exceed that of the Labor Day period.
