Shanghai received some 3.6 million tourists from home and abroad during the Labor Day holiday,8.4 percent more than last year,the municipal Tourism Commission said.

The total revenue in the sector reached 2.12 billion yuan (US$255million) during the period,14 percent higher than the previous year,officials said.

Officials with Shanghai Railway Station said tourists from western and northern China increased significantly this year.The city is attracting more people from the west of China,who are interested in its economic development and the exchanges between western areas and more developed coastal areas,they said.

The city's star-hotels had an average occupation rate of 80percent during the holidays,five percent higher than last year.

The most frequently visited places included Oriental Pearl Tower,Jinmao Tower,Shanghai Ocean Aquarium,the Science and Technology Museum,the Bund sightseeing Tunnel,the Century Park and the Wild Insect Museum,which received 750,000 visitors.

Meanwhile,the largest percentage of local people leaving the city during the holidays went to southern China like Guangzhou,Shenzhen in Guangdong Province,Guilin in Guangxi Province and Kunming in Yunan Province.
