Starting this year, the nearly 10,000 guides in the city will be reviewed annually and those who fail to meet standards will probably lose their licenses, the municipal Tourism Commission said recently.
The evaluation system is designed to insure that guides offer qualified services to tourists, the commission said.
A major goal is to eliminate unqualified guides, officials said. Those involving in collecting rebates, asking for gratuities and forced shopping for extra gain will receive stern punishment. Serious violators will lose their licenses, they said.
Panels of tourism administrators will use evaluations by tourists and scorecards recordingthe guides' violations of regulations to give evaluations.
