South China's Shenzhen City bordering Hong Kong will strive to attract overseas tourists, a local official said in Shenzhen on Wednesday.
Shows highlighting Shenzhen's tourist attractions will be held next year in Japan and Germany, said Chi Xiongbiao, head of the Shenzhen Tourism Bureau.
A campaign calling on people to build the city into one of the best tourist cities in China will be launched soon, Chi said.
Being a major player in China's economic reforms and a major base for the export-oriented economy, Shenzhen plans to sharpen up its tourism in both marketing and management, and to take the lead again in serving the needs of overseas tourists.
Between January and November, the city earned US$1 billion from international tourism, up 10 percent on the same period last year.
During the ninth five-year period (1996-2000), tourism became a pillar industry of the city, and it made over US$5.3 billion from tourism, 15 percent of the city's then total gross domestic product.(xinhua)
