◆ Some 600,000 buses prepared for national holiday

Around 600,000 buses are ready nationwide to start ferrying tourists during the week-long holiday starting from National Day on October 1, said sources with the Chinese Ministry of Communications in Beijing Wednesday.

According to a notice issued by the ministry, all local transportation departments are required to set up an office to organize and supervise holiday transportation, and to maintain a 24-hour tourist hotline, said the notice.

All local passenger transport stations must charge legally and transparently, and any improper operations, like overloading and non-stop long-haul driving, are definitely forbidden, the notice added.

The Chinese government extended two major public holidays, National Day and Labor Day, in 2000, adding two more peak tourism holidays to the calendar.

During the previous Labor Day holiday this year, China's scenic attractions received over 87.1 million tourists, proving a major challenge to the country's transportation sector.
