A 500-meter-street for pedestrians only was recently completed in Weishan Yi-Hui Autonomous County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, in order to preserve historical and cultural relics.
Weishan was once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom, which was founded in the eighth century and survived for more than 200 years.
Historical records show that in 1390, during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, the then local government rebuilt and enlarged the ancient city and part of this has remained to the present days.
Unfortunately in the past, with economic development, tractors, automobiles and motorcycles took over the ancient city, destroying its tranquillity and spoiling its traditional cultural style.
In recent years, the local government has put great emphasis on protecting the city, and included in this is the construction of the new footpath which is aimed at preserving the city's original appearance.
