◆ Three Gorges project to receive state-level quality control

An examination panel directly affiliated to the State Council was set up here Friday to oversee a state-level check on the quality of resettlement and dam clear-up work of the Three Gorges Hydropower Project.

The examination panel is composed of officials and experts from the Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the Ministry of Health.

The panel will carry out a spot check in the dam area of Three Gorges in December, and expects to deliver the results of its work in late April next year.

The world's largest hydropower project has been under construction on the upper section of the Yangtze, China's longest river, for 10 years. In June next year, the project is scheduled to store water up to 135 meters while handling navigation and generating power.

Pu Haiqing, deputy director of Office of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee (TGPCCO), said that although the examination is targeted at the work done during the second phase of the Three Gorges project, it is very important as an overall and systematic examination and authoritative appraisal of the quality of the project.

In order to make a standardized and orderly examination, the State Council has set up three expert panels to oversee the construction, resettlement and power generation of the massive Three Gorges power project.

Pu said TGPCCO has worked in coordination with other departments on specific measures and criteria to properly treat geological hazards, resettlement, land use, water pollution prevention, logging and timber clear-up in the dam area.
