The World Wide Fund for Nature has started a three-year environmental protection project on the eastern shoal of Chongming Island, some 40 kilometers north of Shanghai.
The WWF will carry out a number of missions to help local communities maintain life-form diversity and sustainable development under close cooperation with the local government and schools.
Chongming Island is located where the Yangtze River enters the sea and its eastern shoal is an ideal resting place for thousands of migratory birds traveling across the Asia-Pacific region. Statistics indicate that 274 types of birds inhabit the shoal.
The project is the first test spot for an ambitious plan jointly sponsored by the WWF and the governments of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, which aims to establish an environmental protection zone in the seas of the region.
