 ◆ Meteorologist reviewed climate in fall 2003

Fall 2003, the rainfall of the country, in general, is close to normal, while a significant difference between the north and south parts of the country. The rainfall in northern part has come to the max value in the same period of years since 1961. However, the southern parts have got 192 mm of rainfall only, recorded as the 4th driest fall since 1961.


The rainfall of most part of the country had reached 50 mm., except the mid-western part of northwest China, where the rainfall were less than 50 mm. Among the majority parts, precipitations ranged from 200~400 mm in regions, such as the southwestern part of northwest china, mid-southern part of north China, the most areas between yellow river and Huai River, between huai river and Yangtze River, southern part of south China and northeast part of Sichuan province, etc. And in some part of these areas, the rainfall were even beyond 400 mm. Compared with the precipitation in the same period of most years, the north of Yangtze River received more, and the south got less; specially, the rainfall was 0.5~2 times above normal in the western and eastern part of northwest, north China, and the most parts of regions between Yellow River and Huai River, as well as double the normal value in the parts of south of Xinjiang autonomous region; And the precipitations were 30%~50% below normal in the most parts of provinces south of Yangtze river, and western and the northeastern parts of south China and the southern and the eastern parts of southwest China.

Specially, in parts of Fujian, Zhejiang, Hunan and Jiangxi's province, rainfall were 50%~80% below normal.

The average temperature of the most areas in the country was little higher above normal, with the exception of the southern part of north China, the western part of the region between Yellow River and Huai River and the north of Heilongjiang province where temperature below normal. The temperature in the mid-eastern part of provinces south of Yangtze river, the northeastern part of south China, and Qinghai province and Tibet autonomous region were 1~2? above normal, where some parts were 2~3? above normal.
